Chill your bones at Vancouver’s Polar Bear Swim

88 years have past since the first Vancouver’s Polar Bear Swim took place in 1920. Bone chilling water greets more than 1000 brave souls dressed in their New Year’s best as they take the plunge. Record setting water temperatures of 3 degrees celsius set in 1982 and 1985 ensure a brisk and for many, a very short swim. Started by Peter Patanges the swim has grown from 10 to a high of over 2100.

Never too Old

Much history surrounds the annual swim. Notable is the oldest participant Ivy Granstrom. She participated 77 times completing her final swim at the age of 92.
