Interest Rate Up

This morning the Royal Bank of Canada and the TD bank announced that they are raising their interest rates.

“Royal Bank and TD Canada Trust announced Monday they are increasing several fixed mortgage rates by up to 6/10ths of a percentage point.

The biggest jump is attached to the popular five-year fixed closed rate, which moves from 5.25 per cent to 5.85 per cent at both banks. That’s the posted rate, which is routinely discounted by the big banks.

RBC’s new discounted rate for the five-year term also rises 6/10ths of a percentage point to 4.59 per cent. TD’s rises the same amount to 4.55 per cent.” – Courtesy CBC

What? We just took a variable rate mortgage of $900,000 after doing homebuyers for the entire value of our $50,000 RRSP’s to make a downpayment.
No one told us rates might go up! Now it will cost more to lock in. This is not fair. We need to write our members of parliament.
On our family income of $105,000 this will really hurt us.
Plus my wife is pregnant and does not want to go back to work. The lease on her Volvo SUV is also up.
We are 38 and really would like to retire at 55.
Oh by the way, we also want to put about $100k in to reno the kitchen and bathroom. Without granite countertops I don’t think I could live in this house for more than 1 year.
This is so stressful.
How dare the big bad banks do this.
