Kitsilano Divide circa 1928
Vancouver Archives
These photos were taken on the SE corner opposite the current Kitsilano High School tennis courts. The corner is almost the same. The 1928 version had a boulevard in the middle of the road. Today, the city has closed the gap with traffic calming sidewalks making it easier and safer to cross the street. Notice the distinct lack of trees in the 1928 picture. Without certainty, one of the original homes opposite the camera’s position is still standing and in good shape. The traffic control person delightfully told me that as they were digging down to reach the old sewer line they had discovered the original roadway.Kitsilano Divide June 2008

Wow! I would be the first to start criticizing newer developments and new urbanism but not this time. The power lines were buried, the street light is actually aesthetically pleasing, although they did remove the grass median (which is a no-no)
…very cool Larry.
We do a few things right up here.
FYI the narrowing of the street was in support of the high school which is on the corner opposite to the right of the photographer’s position. It used to be quite wide and presented a pedestrian crossing problem.
What you don’t see is the slight knoll to the rear of the photographer which was also problematic as cars came over this and often screeched to a halt to allow the young people to cross to the other side.
While we have given up the boulevard grassy area and that is unfortunate, the “I made it across” benefit outweighs the grass.
